How We're Qualified to Treat Gum Disease

When your smile is being affected by gum disease, you want a dentist with the experience and qualifications you can trust. At the dental practice of Hagan Rodriguez, our team comprises skilled professionals, including periodontists. A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in diagnosing, preventing, and treating periodontal disease, also known as gum disease.

Periodontists receive extensive training to be able to handle routine and severe gum disease cases. You can rest assured that when you walk through our doors, our diverse dental team will use every tool at their disposal to eliminate your gum disease and prevent it from occurring again.

What Causes Gum Disease?

One of the most important components of treating gum disease is identifying what caused it. Although some of the reasons gum disease develops are preventable, others aren't. By staying up to date with your dental checkups, you increase your chances of our periodontists catching gum disease early before it can worsen. Some of the most common causes of gum disease include:

  • Plaque buildup: Plaque is a thick, sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth and gums. Although regular brushing and flossing removes some plaque, it can quickly build up and cause gum disease.
  • Tobacco use: Smoking, chewing, and using tobacco products can interfere with the function of your gum tissue cells and make you more vulnerable to developing periodontal disease. By eliminating tobacco from your life, you can help keep your smile healthy and free from gum disease.
  • Hormonal shifts: When you become pregnant or experience monthly menstrual cycles, your body's hormones rise and fall. This fluctuation in hormones can make your smile more susceptible to developing gum disease. It's crucial that you stay on top of your oral care routine to help prevent gum disease.

Treating Each Stage of Gum Disease

We're proud to treat each state of gum disease. In its earliest form, gum disease is called gingivitis, characterized by swollen and painful gums. Gingivitis is easily treatable before it progresses to a more severe form of gum disease. If this initial stage of gum disease is left untreated, it can progress into periodontitis where plaque on the surface of your teeth and gums hardens to tartar which can decay teeth and lead to bone loss.

One of the ways that we treat gum disease in its earliest stages is through scaling and root planing. As a non-surgical treatment, scaling and root planing removes bacteria and plaque from below your gum line. Once our periodontist has removed the plaque, our team will smooth the surface of your teeth to help your gums attach to your teeth and prevent future gum disease. If your gum disease is too severe to treat with scaling and root planing alone, we may recommend that you take antibiotics before visiting our office to help make your gum disease more manageable.

Helping You Feel Comfortable During Treatment

We understand some patients may feel anxious when visiting our office for gum disease treatment. As such, we strive to help make you feel as comfortable as possible during your visit. We're happy to answer any questions you have and will do everything we can to make any necessary accommodations. However, if you require a little more help relaxing, our practice offers extensive dental sedation options, including:

Nitrous Oxide Sedation: Nitrous oxide is a safe sedation option ideal for most forms of gum disease. This form of sedation starts when we place a special mask over your nose connected to a mixture of oxygen and a sedative agent. Breathing in the mixture helps numb your entire body and brings about a feeling of relaxation.

Oral Conscious Sedation: Oral conscious sedation is a form of sedation that's administered through pills. Depending on the nature of your gum disease and the severity of your anxiety, it can be provided in small or large dosages. We'll have you take one pill the night before your procedure and another in the hours leading up to it. The pill releases a safe and effective sedative into your body, helping you relax.

IV Sedation: IV sedation is the highest level of sedation our practice offers. IV sedation delivers a special medication into your bloodstream intravenously, which works faster than nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation. Our experienced dental team will oversee the administration of IV sedation by monitoring your vitals and making any necessary adjustments. IV sedation is ideal for most patients, including those with special needs.
